Jal Neti (Saline Nasal Irrigation) for Cleansing, Allergies, Awareness and More:
Winter is just around the corner in Australia. The dreaded flu people suffer from is just around the corner. To help you all I want to explain an Ayurvedic/Yogic Cleansing technique which is excellent for clearing the sinuses and strengthening the subtle channels and membranes in the eyes, ears, nose and throat region. It is called Jal Neti or Nasal Irrigation. We all take our cars for changing the filters and the oils but we never consider cleaning our “own” air filters, put simply, our nostrils.
Although at first Jal Neti might appear gross or “dirty” to do, I can assure you after a few tries, you will wonder why people think it is difficult and avoid doing this great cleansing practice. This is one of the best morning practices you can adopt and it bestows a long list of excellent physical, emotional, mental and spiritual benefits. After about 22 year of daily practice, this morning ritual takes about 4 minutes. And I think it’s the best thing to do and I encourage you to do it. To help you out here is the drill.
Below are the steps (details) for practicing this wonderful cleansing and toning technique. If you have not tried it yet, I strongly suggest you do!
Tools Needed for Jal Neti:
• Neti Pot (available in plastic, ceramic and steel – I use plastic –its light and easy to manage)
• Salt (pure sea salt is preferred)
• Warm Water – definitely not cold and not to hot
• .
• Calms the mind and senses. Promotes peace and tranquility.
How to do Jal Neti:
• The best time for doing Jal Neti is first thing in the morning as part of your morning routine.
• Fill the net pot with warm tap water,
• Add salt to the water. The portions you should use are as follows. 1 level teaspoon of salt for 16 ounces of water (about 1/2 liter of water). This will bring the solution to the right level for the body to accept. You will know if you have put extra salt as you may feel a little uncomfortable. With daily practice you will work out what is right for you. Stick to it once you have nailed it.
• Place the tip of the pot into the right nostril to form a gentle seal. Make sure the tip of the spout of the pot is designed to “seal “ the side of the nostril where you will be pouring in the saline solution.
• Lean forward from the waist, open your mouth and tilt the head to the right. You will slowly work out the correct angle of the tilt that feels comfortable and the water is flowing well from the alternate nostril.
• The water will start to enter through the right nostril and as you remain in this position, will start to flow out the left nostril. When you first start, you may find that there is very little or no flow for some time. Don’t panic or give up. You nose may be blocked and only time and regular practice will make you do this smoothly.
• Breathe through the mouth during this time. Allow 200 mils or more of water to rinse through each side of the nostril.
• Then remove the pot and slowly blow your nose to expel the rest of the water.
• Once the water has been cleared out, do the other side. Water in through the left nostril and out through right.
• Again blow out the water gently once done and you can repeat the cycle if you like.
• Once you are done, do some bending forward moves to remove any trapped water. You will soon work out what move help you to expel the excess water.
The MANY Benefits of Jal Neti:
• Excellent for those with allergies, hay fever, etc.
• Excellent for those prone to getting colds and coughs.
• Treats other respiratory ailments such as sinusitis, asthma, etc.
• Good for the ears and eyes.
• Promotes awareness, intuition and clarity
• Helps with headaches and migraines.
Promotes a sense of freshness and alertness
Jal Neti Tips and helpful hints:
I regularly practice these techniques and want to share with you some important tips to help you with your own practice.
• Make sure the water is not cool and is not too hot. Luke warm will be least irritating. Also, modify the salt content slightly to suit your body. If all is correct it will feel quite smooth and comfortable.
• I have a small pot, so I mix the solution in a large glass first and then pour half into the pot to do one side, and then half to do the other.
• Keep everything handy as that will go a long way in making this a regular practice. Keep all the necessary stuff in your bathroom shelf itself, including the salt.
• I want to re-emphasize that DO NOT blow your nose hard and do not pinch your nostrils when blowing out. This is counter productive and will send rubbish up into your ear canals and upper membranes.
• Keep a tissue with you as some of the water may leak out a few minutes after you are done.
• You may do Jal Neti at least once a day, although for regular practice two times a day is ok.
• Even though this does not sound like the most pleasant practice, it is really worth it and once you do it you will really enjoy the benefits and will soon be promoting it to others as well.
Hope this is of help to you. I would love to hear from you what your experience has been with this practice.
Cheers
Tony

The Growing benefits of meditation
The Growing benefits of meditation
Click Here for some free tools and music for meditation!
Meditation has been practiced for many centuries. The profound art of meditation is something we have mankind has nurtured so dearly. This is because of the many benefits of meditation. Nothing else, single handily, bestows the many wonderful outcomes that meditation brings… in fact there is no knows close substitute. In this article I will outline the many benefits that meditation brings and hopefully it will inspire all to learn and practice this timeless art.
Though meditation is usually recognized as a largely spiritual practice, as mentioned earlier it also has many health benefits. The yoga and meditation techniques are being implemented:-
In management of life threatening diseases,
In transformation of molecular and genetic structure,
In reversal of mental illnesses,
In accelerated learning programs,
In perceptions and communications beyond the physical,
In solving problems;
In gaining better ecological understanding;
In management of lifestyle.
Some specific benefits of meditation are:
• Deep rest-as measured by decreased metabolic rate, lower heart rate, and reduced work load of the heart.
• Lowered levels of cortisol and lactate-two chemicals associated with stress.
• Reduction of free radicals- unstable oxygen molecules that can cause tissue damage.
• Improved blood pressure.
• Higher skin resistance. Low skin resistance is correlated with higher stress and anxiety levels.
• Drop in cholesterol levels. High cholesterol is associated with cardiovascular disease.
• Improved flow of air to the lungs resulting in easier breathing. This has been very helpful to asthma patients.
• Slows down the aging process.
• Increased brain wave coherence.
• Greater creativity.
• Decreased anxiety.
• Decreased depression
• Decreased irritability and moodiness
• Improved learning ability and memory.
• Increased self-actualization.
• Increased feelings of vitality and rejuvenation.
• Increased happiness.
• Increased emotional stability.
Meditation has evolved and transformed itself in many ways, though fundamental principles remain the same. With millions of people practicing meditation in different countries, new practices and styles have evolved. This gives us an array of choices from which we may follow a practice which is best suited to us.
Meditation primarily involves controlling the way we breathe in the air. The easiest and simplest form of meditation involves sitting in an upright position, closing the eyes and concentrating on the way in which we breathe.
Meditation may be practiced anywhere, but sadly we never get the time to do so. However, just by relaxing for a few minutes and letting the body take fresh air and let out the impure air, the circulation of blood to the heart increases and thus the entire body system gets rejuvenated.
It is possible to empty your mind and hence all the stress through meditation. It is a bit tough and involves a lot of practice and strength; not physical, but mental and emotional.
I have been practicing mediation for several years now and it’s almost become a ritual in the morning after my morning routines which include eye cleansing and jalaneti.
I can vouch for some of the many benefits mentioned above and I would love to hear from all you beginners and seasoned mediator’s of you specific experiences and what has worked for you.

What is meditation?
Meditation: What it is ? |
I am often asked by my friends what is meditation. An ordinary person may consider meditation as a worship or prayer related to some world religion. But it is not so. Meditation means awareness and getting back to your original self. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds or gazing as the sun sets is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation. Meditation is not a technique but a way of life. Meditation means 'a cessation of the thought process' .It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns . The observer (one who is doing meditation) realizes that all the activity of the mind is reduced to one. These days it is commonly understood to mean some form of spiritual practice where one sits down with eyes closed and empties the mind to attain inner peace, relaxation or even an experience of God.. The word meditation, is derived from two Latin words : meditari (to think, to dwell upon, to exercise the mind) and mederi (to heal). Its Sanskrit derivation 'medha' means wisdom. Many years ago meditation was considered something just not meant for modern people, but now it has become very popular with all types of people. Published scientific and medical evidence has proved its benefits, but it still needs to be much understood. Traditionally, the classical yoga texts, describe that to attain true states of meditation one must go through several stages. After the necessary preparation of personal and social code, physical position, breath control, and relaxation come the more advanced stages of concentration, contemplation, and then ultimately absorption. But that does not mean that one must perfect any one stage before moving onto the next. The Integral yoga approach is simultaneous application of a little of all stages together. Commonly today, people can mean any one of these stages when they refer to the term meditation. Some talk of concentration techniques, some relaxation, and others teach free form contemplative activities like just sitting and awaiting absorption. Some call it meditation without giving credence to yoga for fear of being branded 'eastern'. But yoga is not something eastern or western as it is universal in its approach and application. With regular practice of a balanced series of techniques, the energy of the body and mind can be liberated and the quality of consciousness can be expanded. This is not a subjective claim but is now being investigated by the scientists and being shown by an empirical fact. I would like to hear from you your experiences and lets share and learn from each other. Cheers Tony |
